These biographies of famous people are designed to support research projects and informational writing units in elementary classrooms.

What Is a Short Biography for Kids?

A short biography for kids is a simplified, nonfiction text that explains a person’s life in a clear and organized way. It typically includes basic background information, major accomplishments, important events, and why the person is remembered.

Unlike full-length biography books, short biographies focus only on the most important life events so students can easily understand and use the information for research and writing projects.

These biographies are written at an elementary reading level so students can independently read, comprehend, and complete follow-up activities.

Why Teachers Use Short Biography Reading Passages

Short biography reading passages make biography units manageable for elementary students. Instead of struggling through long, complex texts, students can focus on the most important life events and accomplishments.

Teachers appreciate short biographies for kids because they clearly model nonfiction structure. Students can see how a life story is organized into sections like early life, major events, and impact, which makes writing their own biography reports much easier.

They also support multiple skills at once. In a single lesson, students practice reading comprehension, sequence of events, vocabulary, and informational writing—without needing multiple resources.

Biography Reading Passage Formats

Each biography is available in two formats. The one-page version is ideal for black-and-white printing and includes condensed text. The two-page version includes color photos, larger text, and increased spacing for whole-group instruction and close reading.

The text is identical in both formats and follows a consistent structure: introduction, early life, adult life, and later life. This predictable organization helps students transfer information directly to graphic organizers and report pages.

Vocabulary & Comprehension Support

The three-part vocabulary cards can be used in several different ways. You have the option of cutting apart all three parts and having students match the word, picture, and definition, or leaving the word and picture together and having students match them with the correct definition.

Students can also use the picture cards in a report display or you can use them on a biography word wall.

How to Teach a Biography Report (Using These Reading Passages)

If you’re planning a full biography report project, these short biographies are designed to be the starting point.

Instead of asking students to search for information online and sort through long texts, you can provide a structured reading passage that already models nonfiction organization. Students read the biography, use the graphic organizer to collect key facts, and then transfer that information into report pages.

Free Biography Sort Activity

If your students struggle with choosing a person for their biography report or understanding what makes someone “famous,” this free Biography Sort is a perfect starting point.

In this activity, students read short descriptions explaining why each person is well known. Instead of simply memorizing names, they focus on identifying the person’s contributions and accomplishments. Students then sort each figure into categories such as president, inventor, civil rights leader, scientist, athlete, women’s rights advocate, and more.

This activity builds important background knowledge before students begin research. It helps them:

  • Recognize patterns in historical contributions
  • Understand how people are remembered in history
  • Practice categorizing information
  • Strengthen nonfiction reading skills

You can use the Biography Sort as an open sort, where students decide the categories themselves, or as a closed sort with pre-labeled headings. It works well as a whole-group introduction, small group activity, or literacy center.

If you’d like a ready-to-use way to introduce famous people and prepare students for biography writing, grab the free Biography Sort above. It’s an engaging way to spark curiosity before students begin their research projects.

  1. Hello! I love all of your products!! I teach a grade 3/4 split on a First Nation in Canada. Would you be able to do any biographies of famous First Nation people from past to present? I haven’t found a whole lot of curriculum on famous Native Americans and Canadians. Thank you!

    1. Jessica Boschen says:

Hmmm . . . I have never learned about First Nation people in Canada. I’m not sure I’m the best person to write about them, given my lack of background information. Do you have a list of people?

  2. Hello,
Some names are: Elijah Harper, Louis Riel, Tom Longboat, Chief Dan George, Hiawatha, Adam Beach, Grahm Greene, Tommy Prince, Joseph Brant, Francis Pegahmagabow, Pound Maker, and Murray Sinclair.

Other famous Native Americans: Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Sacagawea, Tecumseh, Geronimo, Chief Joseph, and Osceola.

    Does this help at all?

    1. Jessica Boschen says:

Thanks for the list! Some of the Native Americans are on our list to create. I’m not familiar with any of the First People names at all. I’m not sure that I’m qualified to write articles about them, unfortunately. I’ll add them to my list, though, and revisit it when we start writing articles again.
