What Part of the Plant Do We Eat – Science Sorting Activity

Teach students about which plant parts we eat with a SORT about identifying plant parts. In this station, students categorize plants by the part that we eat: root, fruit, stem, or leaf and then reflect on the sort through differentiated questions.

A second-grade science station about parts of a plant: fruit, stem, leaf, root. This interactive elementary science activity is perfect for second graders who need to learn about the parts of a plant! #sciencestation #secondgradescience #elementaryscience

What is Included in the Edible Plant Parts Sort Station

Included in the Sort about the Edible Plant Parts are:

  • A Reading passage available in several formats
  • Larger table-group color sorting cards
  • Smaller cut and paste sort for individual students
  • Differentiated questions in short answer, fill-in-the-blank, and multiple-choice formats. Worksheet and task cards are included for some options.
  • Answer key

Edible Plant Parts Sort for Table Groups

There are two ways to do this sort. One way is in table groups where students collaboratively look at the images on the cards and determine which part of each plant that we eat: the root, stem, leaf, or fruit.

Elementary students sort the part of the plant we eat: stem, leaf, root, or flower. This science station aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for second grade. Students read a passage and have two options for the sort: color table sort and a black and white cut and paste sort. After sorting students respond to the sort and reading passage by answering questions in one of four formats including short-answer and multiple-choice. #NGSS #secondgradescience #secondgrade

There are different plants included in this sort, such as lettuce, carrots, peas, and celery. Each of the plants in the sort can be eaten and students will decide which parts of each plant that people eat and sort the plants accordingly.

This sort has colorful images that students analyze to decide which part of the plant is eaten.

Cut and Paste Sort Option

The second way to do the sort is a cut and paste option. Students can do both options: sort color option as a whole group and the cut and paste option individually. Or you can choose to have students do only one option.

The cut and paste option is all in black and white and a worksheet format. After reading the informational passage, students look at the images and then sort each plant by the part that is edible.

Reading Passage & Differentiated Responses

This sort comes with a reading passage to explain the parts of the plant. The reading passage is available in three formats: full-page (what you see below), a large page for reading on devices, and a mini-book option. For all of the second-grade science stations, we have included MP3 audio files for students to listen to the text being read aloud.

The reading passage explains how plants have a stem, roots, leaves, and flowers. Each part helps the plant survive and we eat various parts of plants!

Like all of our science stations, differentiated responses are available for students to demonstrate their understanding. Below is an example of the Short Answer worksheet. Fill-in-the-blanks and multiple-choice task cards are also available.
