Blending Cards with Images
Blending cards help early elementary students by prompting them to pay attention to each sound in the word. These blending cards with images are a great tool to use with beginning readers who need a visual representation of the word. The images are the same across all of our product lines, including our phonics worksheets. These blending cards with images can be used for phonemic awareness or word sorts and are the perfect size for most pocket charts!

What is included with the Blending Cards?
All of the blending cards include visual prompts or reading cues for blending and decoding the words in three different ways:
- Segment the sounds each letter or group of letters makes with dots
- Blend the sounds together using the swooped lines
- Read the word by tracking with the arrow
The cues on each card show students that each letter makes a sound and whether the sound is a continuous or stop sound.
Many of the blending cards also come with picture cards! The cards can easily be printed on colored paper to help students group the sounds together. Using colored paper provides another visual cue for struggling readers.

The images in these cards are the exact same images that are used in the Back-to-Basic Phonics worksheets. Students who work with the words and pictures on the blending cards at one literacy center will experience the same images on the phonics worksheets at another reading station.
Which Blending Cards Have Images?
Not all of the blending card sets have images. I have created pocket chart cards and images for many phonics sets.
Images are currently available for the following patterns:
- Short Vowel CVC Words
- Digraphs for Short Vowels
- R Blends for Short Vowels
- S Blends & Clusters for Short Vowels
- L Blends & Clusters & tw, the, qu
- Final Blends & Clusters
- VCE Words
- Short Vowels with CK

Ways to Differentiate Learning in the Classroom with the Blending Cards with Images
All blending cards and pictures are in black and white for easy printing. The best part is that you won’t run out of color ink! Teachers can differentiate or group the cards by printing them on colored paper.
For instance, print the SH cards in one color and the CH cards in another color. Or to help you keep track of the cards, print all the cards for one phonics pattern on one color.
Another option is the print all the cards in a variety of colors, but be sure to keep the blending card and the image in the same color. While there may be more images, if students know that the colors also have to match, it will make the activity easier for them.

Ways to Use the Phonics Cards in the Classroom
The phonics image cards are sized for most pocket charts. If you need help printing the cards in different sizes, I have a blog post that illustrates other printing options.
Here are a few ways teachers and parents can use the images and blending cards:
- Sort just the images by sound
- Sort just the words by phonics pattern
- Match both the words and images
- Use them to pair up students for partner or group activities
- Put them on display for student reference when working on the phonics worksheets
- Use them during the teacher small group
There are many more possibilities! I’d love to hear how you are using the Blending cards with images below in the comments!
