Types of Water Habitats Sort for Table Groups

There are two ways to do this sort. One way is in table groups where students look at the images on the cards, read the brief descriptions, and decide if each animal lives in a saltwater or freshwater habitat.

Elementary students plants and animals into fresh or salt water habitats. This science station aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for second grade. Students read a passage and have two options for the sort: color table sort and a black and white cut and paste sort. After sorting students respond to the sort and reading passage by answering questions in one of four formats including short-answer and multiple-choice. #NGSS #secondgradescience #secondgrade

This sort has colorful images that students analyze and decide if each body of water is a freshwater or saltwater habitat.

Cut and Paste Sort Option

The second way to do the sort is a cut and paste option. Students can do both options: sort color option as a whole group and the cut and paste option individually. Or you can choose to have students do only one option.

The cut and paste option is all in black and white and a worksheet format. After reading the informational passage, students look at the images, read the short descriptions on each card, and then sort them into the correct type of water habitat.

Reading Passage & Differentiated Responses

This Types of Water Habitats Sort comes with a reading passage about water habitats and a QR Code where students can have the passage read to them. The reading passage focuses on how plants and animals have access to water where they live.

The reading passage comes in three formats: the full-page format you see below, a larger format for iPads or electronic devices, and a mini-book option that students can read in small groups.

Like all of our science stations, differentiated responses are available for students to demonstrate their understanding. Below is an example of the fill-in-the-blank worksheet. Short answer and multiple-choice task cards are also available.
