A Fun Spring Craft

Spring is almost here!  The time has changed, warmer weather is coming and students are ready to wow you with all the learning they have done this year.

This is one of my favorite activities that we do during the year because it shows students how far they have come since the beginning of the year. Furthermore, it’s super versatile! You can use it as an open house craft or as a spring craft throughout the season. It doubles as a writing activity, too.

The Spring Flower Craft features eight purple petals with prompts like “I understand,” “I know,” and “I can.” Its yellow center says “How I Have Grown,” all set on a vibrant green background—perfect for a Spring Open House!.

Look How I Have Grown: Brainstorm Ideas

The activity has students reflect on all the things they’ve learned during the school year.  We first sit on the carpet as a class and make an anchor chart that mimics the graphic organizer students fill out.

The most difficult thing is asking students to be specific.  They are so focused on generic subjects, not skills.  I have to keep prompting, “What did you learn in math this year?”  to help students remember the actual skills and concepts we learned.  Referring to your objectives will help with this, too!

Open House Craft Graphic Organizer

After we have brainstormed a list of ways students have grown this year, students head back to their seats to fill out the graphic organizer.  Students can use ideas from the anchor chart or write their own ideas for ways that they have grown.

On the graphic organizer for the open house are bullets for each petal, using ideas from our anchor chart.  I checked over their graphic organizers before students filled out their petals, to be sure the bullet points are specific enough.

Look How I Have Grown: Create the Craftivity

After students fill out their graphic organizers, I provide them with the center part of the flower and the petals.  You will need to print two sets of the petals for a total of 6 petals.

Students transfer their writing from the graphic organizer to the petals of the open house craft.  They then color, cut, and glue.

Display the Open House Craft & Writing Activity

In our classroom, I tape the flowers to our window facing out so all the parents can read about how hard their child has worked this year.  My students add their names to the center of the flower, but I’ve blocked them out in the photos below.  This makes a great display for Open House.

It’s really hard to take a photo through reflective tinted glass, but you get the idea!  I love how the flowers turned out with the addition of grass and stems.  It makes it look so colorful and springy!
