My Father’s Dragon Activities

For the past few weeks we have been reading My Father’s Dragon.

my father's dragon book.

It’s on the Common Core Reading List, so I thought I’d give it a try to see how it went as a read aloud.  It’s a cute story with very short chapters.  I’m not in love with the book.  We’ll finish it, but I’m not sure I’ll read it again.

My student teacher is reading it aloud to our class and doing pieces of a lap book with the students.

Overall, it’s a good book, but not as engaging as other stories we have read.  I really think my four-year-old would like it as a read aloud before bedtime, which we might do this summer.  We’ve extended it a bit by asking that student to respond in complete sentences on their foldable pieces.  The book is a bit too young for my kiddos right now, content-wise, but perfect for them chapter-length wise, if that makes sense.

We are in need of some more read alouds after we finish this book (tomorrow).  Do you have any good read alouds for second graders?
