Wind or Water Erosion Sort – Weathering Science Activity

Teach students about wind and water weathering and erosion with a SORT about Wind and Water Changes aligned with the Next Generation Science Stations. In this second grade station, students read about weathering and erosion and look at images on each sort card to determine if a change has occurred because of wind or water weathering or erosion.

A second-grade science station about wind and water changes. This interactive elementary science activity is perfect for second graders who need to learn about how landforms change due to wind erosion or weathering by water. #sciencestation #secondgradescience #elementaryscience

What is Included in the Wind or Water Changes Sort Station

Included in the Sort about the Wind or Water Changes are:

  • Reading Passage about wind and water erosion
  • Larger table-group color sorting cards
  • Smaller cut and paste sort for individual students
  • Differentiated questions in short answer, fill-in-the-blank, and multiple-choice formats. Worksheet and task cards are included for some options.
  • Answer key

Wind or Water Changes Sort for Table Groups

There are two ways to do this sort. One way is in table groups where students collaboratively look at the images on the cards, read the brief description on each card, and determine which type of change the landform underwent: wind or water weathering and erosion.

Elementary students sort whether wind or water changes the land. This science station aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for second grade. Students read a passage and have two options for the sort: color table sort and a black and white cut and paste sort. After sorting students respond to the sort and reading passage by answering questions in one of four formats including short-answer and multiple-choice. #NGSS #secondgradescience #secondgrade

In this sort, students learn about how landforms can change as a result of erosion and weathering due to wind and water. Students look at the image, read the description, and sort the card.

This sort has colorful images that give students opportunities to identify changes in the appearance of landforms as a result of weathering and erosion.

Weathering & Erosion Cut and Paste Sort Option

The second way to do the sort is a cut and paste option. Students can do both options: sort color option as a whole group and the cut and paste option individually. Or you can choose to have students do only one option.

The cut and paste option is all in black and white and a worksheet format. After reading the informational passage, students look at the images, read the brief descriptions, and then sort them into the correct type of change: wind or water weathering and erosion.

Reading Passage & Differentiated Responses

This Wind or Water Changes Sort comes with a reading passage that describes how the Earth is continually going through changes due to weathering or erosion. The reading passage has colorful photographs and describes the processes of weathering and erosion. The reading passage comes with an MP3 audio recording for your young learners who have difficulty reading. It is also available in three formats: full-page, large format for devices and a mini-book format for small groups.

Differentiated Responses

Like all of our science stations, differentiated responses are available for students to demonstrate their understanding. Below is an example of the fill-in-the-blank worksheet. Short answer and multiple-choice task cards are also available to meet the needs of all of your learners.
