Reading Notebook Example for Second Grade
We’ve been having fun with our Reading Notebooks. I love how this one turned out, so I thought I’d share it with you.
First, we read My Name is Yoon, which is in our Treasures reader.

With the class, I filled out a Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then summary graphic organizer on chart paper, that mirrored the above foldable from this Sweet Summarizing Literacy Packet
We then filled out the foldable and glued it into our Reading Notebooks.

From here, students used the graphic organizer to write a summary. I guided students through this process, writing a topic sentence with the title and summary statement. Then, we flipped open each part and wrote the summary. It was perfect!

After students wrote their summary, they were able to decorate their page. This was my sample emphasizing how not to draw over your writing! Below are some student samples.

How do you use reading notebooks? We’re just getting used to them this year, so it’s been slow going. Plus, most of my instruction is during small groups, where we don’t really have the time to do this detailed work with comprehension. When we have the time, I love it!
How have you use reading notebooks this year?

This is a great idea! We are starting Common Core this year, and I’ve been struggling to adapt the Treasures series with it. I love using our Reading Notebooks, and this is a great way to incorporate the series!
