Make 100 and Make 1000 resources that help students use number lines, base-10 blocks, and learn how to “jump” to the nearest friendly number. The resources in this product are designed to help students Make 100 and Make 1000.

First-grade teachers spend a lot of time helping students “make 10,” but I find that I don’t spend as much time “making 100” or “making 1000” before asking students to add and subtract two-digit or three-digit numbers. I use the Make 100 resources toward the beginning of the year before we begin two-digit addition and subtraction, and the Make 1000 resources before we start three-three-digit addition and subtraction.

NOTE: This includes a fully editable Powerpoint so you can change out the numbers and create even more activities for your students.

The strategies in this resource compliment the strategies used in my other two-digit and three-digit resources:

➟ Use a Number Line

➟ Use Base-10 Blocks

➟ Break Apart (Ungroup) one addend

In addition to the above strategies are fun activities, such as mazes, number searches, coloring, and matching cards.

This Make 100 and Make 1000 product compliments my Roll and Spin Math Activities for Two-Digit AdditionBoth focus on developing how students use a number line and place value strategies.

I used this with a 13y/o who still did not know the bonds of 10 and was extremely anxious about calculating change for ZAR1.00. She visibly started to relax as we progressed through the worksheets and after about 30 min she was able to subtract any number from 100 with ease. I wish you could have seen her face! I love the number line idea (she enjoyed making loops to show how she jumped to the next friendly number). When she felt comfortable enough, she dropped that and started working in her head, which was the proof she needed that she was able to do this!

  42. Zaino’s Creations (verified owner)

This resource has some great activities! I like how there is a powerpoint for me to change the numbers so I can create additional resources. However, there is only 1 or 2 of each type of resource. For example, there is only 1 math fact maze. If would have been nice to have some variety instead of paying $5 and still having to create content myself. However, if you’re willing to do a little work it has some good stuff and is a wonderful template for making more things.
