Light It Up! Science Stations for Fourth Grade Next Generation Science Standards include 8 different science stations where students deepen their understanding of properties of visible light.

Light It Up! Science Stations for Fourth Grade Next Generation Science Standards include 8 different science stations where students deepen their understanding of properties of visible light. The focus is on 4-PS4.B and includes concepts such as light absorption, reflection and refraction, convex and concave mirrors and lenses and telescopes, how light moves through water, visible light and vision, transmission of light through kaleidoscopes, primary colors of light and primary colors of pigment, and transparent, translucent and opaque objects.
Image and Vision Science Stations Include
- Vocabulary Cards in two formats with and without pictures.
- Watch – Students watch a video about light or about absorption, reflection and refraction. Students then answer questions about the videos.
- Play – Students interact with a video game about light then answer questions about the games.
- Investigate – Students read about convex and concave mirrors and lenses and build a telescope. Different groups construct different telescopes. Groups compare models in order to determine which periscope model provides the best view. Students then answer questions to reinforce the concepts learned.
- Diagram – Students read about reflection, refraction, and absorption. They observe how light moves through water and draw diagrams their observations and then answer questions about the diagram.
- Read a Passage – Students read about visible light and vision. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.
- Model – Students read about absorption, reflection, and transmission of light. They create a model of absorption, reflection, and transmission of light by building a kaleidoscope. They then answer questions.
- Explore – Students read about and primary colors of light and primary colors of pigment. They explore light and pigments in a hands-on activity. They then answer questions in order to reinforce the concepts.
- Sort – Students read about objects that are transparent, translucent, and opaque. They sort a variety of objects into those three categories and then answer questions about the sort.
Google Classroom™️ Components Include:
- Google Form™️ with Reading Passage & Differentiated Questions (for Watch, Investigate, Diagram, Read, Model, Explore and Sort)
- Google Slides™️ with Activity Directions & Worksheets (for Investigate, Diagram, Model, Explore, Sort)
Each station is designed to last about 15-20 minutes. Students may do one a day for eight days, two a day for four days, or any format that works for your classroom. Because there are additional activities for the Watch and Play stations, you can offer those as a choice within that station or offer them as an early finisher station, as well.
By working through this set of stations, students will gain a robust understanding of the properties of visible light. The Engineering Standards for fourth grade are also incorporated into this set of stations. See the preview for more details on the how the four physical science Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) are combined and how the engineering standards are incorporated.
