Pizza Box Writing Portfolios: A Creative End of the Year Writing Activity
Looking for a creative end of the year writing activity that helps students reflect on their growth without adding a ton of prep? Pizza box writing portfolios are a fun, low-cost way for students to organize their best writing from the year. And yes, they really do use pizza boxes.
As the school year winds down, my students are completing their final projects and cleaning out their desks. One of my favorite ways to wrap things up is with student writing portfolios. Instead of sliding papers into a standard folder that gets bent on the way home, we use something sturdier and a lot more memorable: clean pizza boxes.

These pizza portfolios turn end-of-year reflection into a hands-on project students actually care about.
Why Use Pizza Boxes for Writing Portfolios?
Traditional folders work fine for flat papers, but many writing projects aren’t flat. Throughout the year, students create foldables, mini-books, graphic organizers, and interactive writing pieces that never quite fit.
Pizza boxes solve that problem.
They’re:
- Large enough to hold layered writing projects
- Durable for taking home
- Easy to label and decorate
- Just different enough to feel special
We were lucky to get clean, unused pizza boxes from a local pizza shop. As a class, we made a thank-you card and took a group photo to show our appreciation, an unexpected bonus that built community along the way.
What Goes Inside an End-of-the-Year Pizza Box Portfolio?
Each student started with a portfolio cover and a table of contents. From there, they selected writing pieces that showed their best work from the year.
Our portfolios included:
- 3 opinion writing pieces
- 3 informational writing pieces
- 3 narrative writing pieces
Giving students choices helped them reflect on their progress and take ownership of their work. It also gave me a clear snapshot of what we emphasized and what needs more attention next year.

Using Pizza Portfolios for Writing Reflection
Putting the portfolios together became a built-in reflection activity. Students reread their work, compared early pieces to later ones, and discussed how their writing had changed.
This makes pizza box portfolios a strong option for:
- End-of-the-year writing reflection
- Student-led conferences
- Take-home keepsakes for families
- Writing celebrations or open houses
Parents loved seeing everything in one place, and students were proud to carry their portfolios home.
A Meaningful End-of-the-Year Writing Project
If you’re collecting writing samples or creating end-of-year memory books, pizza box writing portfolios offer a fun and functional alternative to traditional folders. They hold everything, spark conversation, and help students see how far they’ve come as writers.
Sometimes the simplest ideas, like a clean pizza box, end up being the most memorable.

What a great way to reflect on writing throughout the year. I my room, each student has a hanging file in a file cabinet and we call it their “Treasure Chest.” They were so excited last week when they got to empty their treasure chest and see how far their writing has come this year. I’m glad I found your blog and could be your newest follower!
