Part-Part-Whole Dot Flash Cards
These Part-Part-Whole Dot Flash Cards are the best for helping students learn subitizing, math facts, and how to discuss their ideas!

Each card is full-page, but could be printed half page or one-quarter page by changing your printer settings when printing.

Cut the cards on the dotted line, which is hard to see in these photos, but it separates the two addends. Fold back one of the parts or the whole and ask students what the other number is. Each number has a card that matches a ten frame set up (five on the top and five on the bottom) as well as other dot arrangements that are used with dot images or subitizing.

I have my students point to their heads and press their lips together to remind them to “keep it in their heads” rather than shouting out the answer. Then I have two or three students share the “answer” and “how they know” or “what they saw”. This helps us enter a mathematical discussion about how we can see different arrangements and to start grouping images together.
These cards can also be used for dot talks, by cutting out just the dots. Print the same image several times and then three or four students can share how they saw the dots images.
If you’d like a set of these cards, they’re in my TpT store.
Do you use dot images in your class? How?
