Parts of a Flower: A Labeled Guide for Kids (Grades 2-5)
Hand a student a real flower and a hand lens, and something clicks that a textbook picture never quite manages. Suddenly, the parts of a flower are not vocabulary words to memorize; they are things students can see, touch, and pull apart. Flowers are how most plants make seeds, and each part has a job in that process.

This post breaks down the parts of a flower in a labeled, kid-friendly way, explains what each one does, shows how the parts work together in pollination, and shares how to teach it with a flower dissection your students will remember.
The Parts of a Flower, Labeled
A flower has four main parts, and it helps students to picture them from the outside in. Here is each part and its job:
- Petals. The colorful parts most people notice first. Their bright colors and scent attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
- Sepals. The small, usually green leaf-like parts at the base of the flower. They protect the flower while it is still a bud.
- Stamen. The male part of the flower. It has two pieces: the anther, which makes the powdery pollen, and the filament, the thin stalk that holds the anther up.
- Pistil. The female part of the flower, usually in the center. It has three pieces: the stigma, the sticky top that catches pollen; the style, the tube that leads down; and the ovary, the base where seeds form.
A simple way to help students remember: the stamen makes pollen, and the pistil receives it. Once students can name these four parts and point to them on a real flower, the rest of the lesson falls into place.

What Each Part of a Flower Does
The parts of a flower all work toward one goal: making seeds so the plant can reproduce. It helps students to sort the parts into two groups by their job.
The petals and sepals support the process. Petals attract pollinators with color and scent, and sepals protect the flower as it develops. The stamen and pistil carry out reproduction. The stamen produces pollen, and the pistil catches that pollen and grows the seeds in its ovary. Many flowers have both a stamen and a pistil, which students often find surprising and worth discussing.
How the Parts of a Flower Work in Pollination
Pollination is the moment the parts of a flower come together. Pollen from the anther has to reach the sticky stigma, and most flowers need help to make that happen. A bee lands on a flower for its nectar, brushes against the anther, and carries pollen to the next flower it visits. That is why bright petals and sweet scent matter so much: they bring the pollinators that move the pollen.
Once pollen reaches the stigma, it travels down the style to the ovary, where seeds begin to form. Those seeds are how the plant makes the next generation. How to Teach the Parts of a Flower
Flowers are one of the few science topics you can put directly in students’ hands, so lean into that:
- Dissect a real flower. Lilies and tulips are large and easy to take apart. Have students pull off the petals and sepals, then find the stamen and pistil, and lay the parts out to examine.
- Label a diagram. After the dissection, students label a diagram of the parts, which cements the vocabulary while it is fresh.
- Match part to job. Have students connect each part to its function, so they learn the function and not just the name.
- Color and build. A coloring page or a flower students build from paper reinforces the parts for those who learn best by making.

The same flower works across the grades if you adjust the depth:
- Grades K-1: Focus on the parts students can see, petals, stem, and leaves, and the idea that flowers make seeds.
- Grade 2: Name the four main parts and connect them to how plants depend on animals like bees to move pollen, which is a core 2nd grade life science idea.
- Grades 3-5: Go deeper into the stamen and pistil, the steps of pollination, and how the flower’s structure helps the plant survive and reproduce.
