Free Find Someone Who Activities for Kids

Find someone who activities for kids are one of those first-week staples that take almost no prep and never fail. Students move around the room with a grid of prompts, find a classmate who matches each one, and record a name in the box. Within 15 minutes, they’ve talked to most of the class — and you’ve learned a lot about who your social connectors are.

These activities work for grades K–5, but they’re especially effective for grades 2–5, when students are old enough to read the prompts independently and engage in short follow-up conversations. Grab the free back-to-school version below and see how it goes on the first day.

Why Find Someone Who Activities Build Classroom Community

One of the primary benefits of the “Find Someone Who” activities is their ability to build a strong sense of community within the classroom. Here’s how these activities help:

  1. Promoting Interaction: These activities require students to move around and interact with multiple peers. This breaks the ice and helps students develop social skills and build friendships.
  2. Fostering Inclusivity: By ensuring that students ask each question of a different classmate, the activities promote inclusivity and make sure everyone is involved.
  3. Encouraging Conversations: The follow-up questions included in the instructions encourage deeper conversations. Students learn more about each other’s experiences, interests, and backgrounds, which helps them connect on a more personal level.
  4. Highlighting Common Interests: As students discover shared experiences and interests, it fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
  5. Creating a Positive Atmosphere: The activities are designed to be fun and engaging, which helps create a positive and welcoming classroom atmosphere.

I recently created a bundle of Find Someone Who Activities that can be used during any season of the year! This comprehensive bundle includes five editions tailored for Back to School, Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer, ensuring that your classroom stays lively and interactive throughout the year.

What’s Included in the Find Someone Who Bundle?

Each edition of the “Find Someone Who” activity is a PDF containing a grid of statements related to the respective season. These statements are carefully categorized to align with seasonal themes, such as outdoor activities, nature and environment, school-related tasks, personal experiences, and more. Here’s a brief overview of what you can expect in each edition:

  1. Back to School Edition: Focuses on getting-to-know-you activities that help students share their interests, hobbies, and summer experiences.
  2. Fall Edition: Features prompts related to autumn activities, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the changing season.
  3. Winter Edition: Includes statements about winter holidays, snow-related activities, indoor coziness, and winter wildlife.
  4. Spring Edition: Celebrates the rejuvenation of spring with activities that highlight outdoor adventures, blooming nature, and spring festivities.

How to Play Find Someone Who

The setup is simple. Each student gets a grid (usually 4×4 or 5×5) where each box contains a statement or prompt, such as “has a pet,” “played a sport this summer,” or “can name all 50 states.” Students walk around the room and find a different classmate who matches each prompt, writing that student’s name in the box.

The rule that makes it work: each student can only sign another student’s sheet once. That rule is what pushes students to talk to people they don’t already know.

Once most students have filled their grids (or time is up), bring everyone back together for a quick share-out. Ask a few students to share something surprising they found out about a classmate. That debrief is where the real community building happens.

The whole activity runs 15–20 minutes, making it easy to fit into a first-day schedule without losing setup time.

Find Someone Who Questions for Kids: Sample Prompts

The prompts make or break the activity. They need to be specific enough to spark a real conversation but broad enough that most students can find matches. Here are some examples that work well across grades 2–5:

  • Has visited another state
  • Can say hello in another language
  • Has a pet at home
  • Played outside this morning
  • Knows how to cook something
  • Has read more than 10 books this summer
  • Has a sibling in this school
  • Was born in a different state
  • Has never seen snow
  • Can name the last book they read

The back-to-school version focuses on summer experiences and getting-to-know-you prompts. The seasonal editions shift the prompts to match whatever time of year you’re using them, so the activity stays fresh even if students have done it before.

How to Use the Seasonal Find Someone Who Activities

These activities are incredibly versatile and can be integrated into your classroom routine in various ways. Here are some ideas on how to use them effectively:

  1. First Day Icebreakers: Start the school year or a new semester with the Back to School edition. This activity is perfect for breaking the ice and helping students feel more comfortable with their peers.

Tips for Maximizing the Benefits of a Find Someone Who Activity

To get the most out of these activities, consider the following tips:

  1. Debrief Sessions: After completing the activity, hold a debrief session where students can share what they learned about their classmates. This can be done as a whole group or in smaller groups and helps reinforce the connections made during the activity.
  2. Highlighting Discoveries: During the debrief, highlight interesting or unexpected things students discovered about each other. This validates the activity and celebrates the diversity within the classroom.
  3. Incorporating Variations: Keep the activities fresh by incorporating the suggested variations. For example, turn it into a bingo game where the first student to fill a row, column, or diagonal with names shouts “Bingo!” or introduce a time challenge to add excitement.
  4. Using for Assessment: These activities can also be a subtle way to assess students’ social skills, confidence levels, and ability to interact with peers.

The seasonal “Find Someone Who” activity bundle is a fantastic resource for keeping your classroom dynamic, inclusive, and engaged throughout the year.
