VCE Phonics Worksheets – Silent E Worksheets
Do you need some ways for students to practice reading, writing, spelling, and working with VCE words or words with silent E? These phonics worksheets for VCE Words are great for first-grade literacy centers, homework, reading small groups and more! Students read and write a variety of VCE words through fill-in-the-blank, cut and paste, and more!

The VCE worksheets include words with digraphs and blends. These are a great resource to provide extra practice with reading and writing words with VCE words or silent E words.
What is Included in the Blends Worksheets?
The VCE worksheets are grouped by long vowel. Also available are a mixed set and a BUNDLE.
The blends worksheets can also be printed at a reduced size and can be used for interactive notebooks. This Phonics Interactive Notebook blog post will give you ideas on how to move beyond the worksheet into a phonics notebook.
There are 20+ worksheet templates with multiple versions of most templates within each section. Some numbers are missing. These worksheets appear in the CVC Short Vowels or Digraph sets but have been removed for the blends set.

Words included in the worksheets
These phonics worksheets include VCE words as well as common long I and O sounds. For example, we have included the words: go, so, no, and words with -ind, -ild, -olt, -old, -ost.
I have also included CVC words that align with specific VCE words as distractors. They are sprinkled throughout the worksheets. Students need to pay attention and use their knowledge of CVC and VCE words to complete the sheets.
The previews on Teachers Pay Teachers have the words lists so you can see all of the words included in the worksheets.
Examples of Each VCE Worksheet Page
The 23 VCE Worksheets are repeated in each of the individual sets and the mixed VCE set. There are often multiple pages of each worksheet in each set.
The photographs below come from the mixed VCE set. While many of the worksheets are the same as the previous levels (CVC Short Vowels & Digraph), I have also added NEW worksheet templates.
Sets are available for individual vowels and as a MIXED set, plus a BUNDLE
I have chosen to work on VCE E words alongside EE and EA words in worksheets for long vowel teams. Those will be coming in the future.
Many of the worksheets utilize the blending cues available on our Blending Cards. Blending cues are dots to segment the word, dotted lines to blend the word, and a large arrow to “read it fast”.
Students can use the blending cues to read the word, then do the work on the worksheets. If you’re already using the Blending Cards, these worksheets are a great accompaniment.
#1 Color the Picture
On this first worksheet, students read the word using the blending cues. They then color the picture that matches the word.
After students complete the worksheet, they could cut it out in strips and boxes and create flashcards with the words and pictures.

#3 Read, Trace, Write
This worksheet has students read the word using the blending cues, then trace and write the word.

#4 Read, Write, Color
This VCE phonics worksheet is similar to the first one; however, now students are asked to write the word as well as read and color the image.

#5 Spell & Write
On this worksheet, students look at the picture, segment the word,

#6 Match & Write
This is a match and

#7 Color the Word
This worksheet asks students to color the word that matches the picture from a list of three words.
This worksheet makes a great interactive notebook activity when cut up. Students can take one square, color the word, and glue it in their notebook.

#8 Read and Check
This VCE worksheet is a bit more complicated and great for your more advanced readers. It asks students to read and check the sentence that goes with the picture.

#9 Write Two Times
On this worksheet, students write the word two times.

#10 Read, Match Write
On this worksheet, students read the sentence and figure out which word is missing, given the list of words. Students write the word in the blank space.

#11 Sentence Scramble Cut & Paste
For this worksheet, students are presented with four to seven words that make a sentence. Each row has its own set of words. Students cut apart the words and create the sentence.
If students have difficulty with this task, give them some hints, like the period ends the sentence and the sentence starts with a capital letter.

#12 Write a Sentence
This worksheet is similar to the above worksheet, except instead of a cut and paste, students are asked to write the sentence, given the four to seven words.

#13 Picture Sort
This is a traditional picture sort. Students say the word in the picture and determine the long vowel sound that matches.
In the individual Long Vowel VCE Sets students sort by word families.

#14 Word Sort
This is similar to a traditional word sort but includes blending cues to help students read the words.
This is another sheet that would be good for interactive notebooks. Cut the columns and glue them down to a page in a notebook. Students sort and glue the words in the appropriate columns.
In the individual Long Vowel VCE Sets students sort by word families.

#15 Write by Word Family
This is another worksheet that emphasizes word families. On it, students write the words that go along with the word family.

#16 Cut & Paste Onset & Rime
This worksheet is similar to the above, but with picture cues and a cut and paste component.

#17 Cut. Paste. Write.
This VCE worksheet is a cut and

#18 Cut & Paste Onset & Rime. Write.
On this worksheet, students match the onset and rime and then write the word.

#20 Write Sentences
This sheet is for your more advanced students who need practice with blends. On this worksheet, students write four sentences using the who, did what, add on structure. Students can create silly sentences or mimic sentences they have worked with on other pages.

#21 Word Construction
On this sheet students construct words based on the three different parts of the word. There is a list of initial sounds, long vowel, and ending sound.
On the mixed VCE set, students practice with different vowels. The individual vowels have more of an emphasis on word families.

#22 Write the Rime
This sheet is similar to writing the words, but give students a bit of help. Students are given the onset and have to write the rime, remembering to include the silent E.

#23 Cut & Paste Sentences
This page is similar to the Write a Sentence, but is a cut and paste version.

#24 Read. Choose. Write. Draw.
On this sheet, students need to determine which word goes in the blank and then draw a sketch of the sentence. This task requires a bit of visual discrimination and ability to notice which word is correct.

Many of the VCE phonics worksheets are similar with some small tweaks. One worksheet may ask students to match a word and another may ask them to write it.
Providing so many different options gives plenty of choices, variety, and practice with reading and writing VCE words.
