Second Grade Math Curriculum Map

Mapping out your school year can be one of the best projects to do as a teacher.  I call it a project because it can be a daunting process.  In a previous post, Planning for a Year, I touched on how I plan for the year, for each unit or week of instruction, and each day.  In this post, I want to share with you the Second Grade Math Curriculum Map that I use in my classroom.

What is Included in the Math Curriculum Map

This second-grade math curriculum map will give you an idea of the scope and sequence of math instruction for second grade.

This is the same curriculum map I have taught the past several years. Although a few of the standards have changed months here and there (like geometry and measurement), most of it has remained consistent.

Most of the content is chronological and meant to be taught in the sequence it is presented. However, there are a few standards / units that can be changed around, like the measurement and geometry standards. Those can be placed anywhere during the year.

The first part of the year is heavily focused on addition. Once I make sure students have a solid understanding of addition, we focus intently on subtraction during the middle of the year. I have found that this separate focus helps students go deep with one skill before moving onto the opposite one.

Comes in Two Formats

The curriculum map comes in two formats.  One format is text-based, is smaller, and aligns each standard by month of the year.  Although the standards are placed within a month, I’m a little more flexible in my actual teaching.  I don’t start each month with a new topic, but make the curriculum flow, using the curriculum map as a guideline to be sure I’m on pace to do what I have planned.

This Second Grade Math Curriculum Map outlines the Common Core Math Standards for second grade over the course of a full year. This is the same curriculum map I have used in my classroom for the past several years. It is presented in two formats. One format is by month, to give you an idea of the scope and sequence of the standards. The other format is by unit, where I have outlined which resources I use to teach and supplement that unit of standards.

The second format is by unit.  There are 9 units of instruction formed around conventional second grade math topics.

  1. Understand Addition & Subtraction
  2. Two-Digit Addition
  3. Place Value
  4. Measurement
  5. Two-Digit Subtraction
  6. Three-Digit Addition & Subtraction
  7. Shapes, Partitioning, Fractions
  8. Time & Money
  9. Multiplication

The page for each unit has the Common Core Standards being addressed, links to relevant blog posts for the unit, as well as products and resources that compliment the unit.  This is my way to sharing with you want I use in my classroom to teach these concepts.
