2nd Grade Math Curriculum Map (Free Download for Teachers)

Planning a full year of math instruction takes time, but having a solid 2nd grade math curriculum map makes the process much more manageable. I use a curriculum map to outline my scope and sequence before the year starts so I can teach with intention rather than scrambling week to week. In a previous post about Planning for a Year, I shared how I approach yearly planning overall. This post is specifically about the second grade math curriculum map I use — and you can download it free below.

What is Included in the Math Curriculum Map

This second-grade math curriculum map will give you an idea of the scope and sequence of math instruction for second grade.

This is the same curriculum map I have taught the past several years. Although a few of the standards have changed months here and there (like geometry and measurement), most of it has remained consistent.

Most of the content is chronological and meant to be taught in the sequence it is presented. However, there are a few standards / units that can be changed around, like the measurement and geometry standards. Those can be placed anywhere during the year.

The first part of the year is heavily focused on addition. Once I make sure students have a solid understanding of addition, I focus intently on subtraction during the middle of the year. I have found that this separate focus helps students go deep with one skill before moving onto the opposite one.

Comes in Two Formats

The curriculum map comes in two formats.  One format is text-based, is smaller, and aligns each standard by month of the year.  Although the standards are placed within a month, I’m a little more flexible in my actual teaching.  I don’t start each month with a new topic, but make the curriculum flow, using the curriculum map as a guideline to be sure I’m on pace to do what I have planned.

This Second Grade Math Curriculum Map outlines the Common Core Math Standards for second grade over the course of a full year. This is the same curriculum map I have used in my classroom for the past several years. It is presented in two formats. One format is by month, to give you an idea of the scope and sequence of the standards. The other format is by unit, where I have outlined which resources I use to teach and supplement that unit of standards.

The second format is by unit.  There are 9 units of instruction formed around conventional second grade math topics.

  1. Understand Addition and Subtraction — Students build a conceptual foundation for both operations before moving into larger numbers.
  2. Two-Digit Addition — Focus shifts to adding two-digit numbers with and without regrouping using place value strategies.
  3. Place Value — Students work with hundreds, tens, and ones to understand how numbers are built and compared.
  4. Measurement — Covers measuring length using standard and non-standard units and comparing measurements.
  5. Two-Digit Subtraction — After building fluency with addition, students move into Two-Digit Subtraction, including regrouping.
  6. Three-Digit Addition and Subtraction — Students extend their understanding to three-digit numbers using the same strategies learned earlier.
  7. Shapes, Partitioning, and Fractions — An introduction to geometry and early fraction concepts through partitioning shapes into equal parts.
  8. Time and Money — Students practice telling time to the nearest five minutes and counting coins and bills.
  9. Multiplication — A brief introduction to equal groups and repeated addition as a foundation for multiplication in later grades.

The page for each unit includes the Common Core Standards addressed, links to relevant blog posts for the unit, and products and resources that complement it.  This is my way of sharing with you what I use in my classroom to teach these concepts.
