CVC Phonics Puzzles by Sound & by Word Family
Do you need more word work centers in your kindergarten literacy stations? These CVC Phonics Puzzles are a great tool to use during your reading center or as an independent word work center. Students can say the sounds, put words together, and find matching pictures.

Included are 234 CVC words for short a, short I, short o, short e, and short u in two formats. Most of the pictures match the CVC Phonics Worksheets and CVC Blending Cards images. If you already use those phonics resources in your classroom, students will be familiar with the images and easily be able to put the puzzles together.
The puzzles come in two formats. One format has each sound on a separate piece with four pieces. The other format is by word family or onset / rime with three pieces.
Why have Students use CVC Phonics Puzzles during their Literacy Centers?
Using CVC Phonics Puzzles in the classroom is important for early elementary students because it helps them practice a variety of sounds to form words and associate those words with their corresponding pictures. This skill is a crucial step in learning to read and spell words independently.
Additionally, using puzzles in word work activities helps keep students engaged and encourages critical thinking skills. Research has shown that hands-on, interactive activities like these puzzles can improve retention and understanding for young learners.
By incorporating CVC Phonics Puzzles into literacy instruction, teachers can provide an effective and enjoyable way for students to strengthen their phonics skills.
CVC Phonics Puzzles by Sound
The first format has three pieces, one for each sound, and a picture, for a total of four pieces. Pictures come in color. The letters P, B, D, and Q are underlined in the resource, although the underlines are not photographed below.

Phonics Puzzles by Word Family or Onset and Rime
The second format is by word family or onset and rime. Make these puzzles easier by including the picture with the rime. If the picture is included with the rime, the puzzles will only have two pieces. This is the easiest format for students.

Make the Puzzles Easier!
Make the puzzles easier by including the picture with the last letter or the rime pieces instead of cutting it apart as a separate piece.
