Plant Growth Science Stations Unit BUNDLE

These Plant Growth Next Generation Science Stations include eight different science stations where students deepen their understanding of how plants grow, including understanding plant parts, photosynthesis, the flow of energy, plant tissues, and the need for air and water. The focus is on 5-LS1-1.

Plant Growth Stations Include

► Checklists for teachers and students (only available in the BUNDLE)

► Watch a Video – Students watch one of two videos about plant growth including what seeds or plants need to grow. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ available)

► Play a Game – Students play a board game with other students or do a crossword or word search puzzle. The crossword and word search puzzles are available digitally.

► Investigate Light and Dark Seeds – Students read about what plants need to grow and investigate the importance of light in seed germination. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google From™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Diagram Plant Food – Students read about what plants need to grow. They create diagrams of this based on the reading section. Students then answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google From™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Read about Plant Growth – Students read about what plants need to grow. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google From™️ is available)

► Model a Down and Dirty – Students read about what plants need to grow. They perform an activity that models plant growth in different soils. Students answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google From™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Explore A Breath of Fresh Air – Students read about plant growth and explore the effect of air on plant growth. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google From™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Sort Will This Plant Grow?– Students read about what plants need to grow. They sort scenarios into two categories. They will then answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google From™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

Google Classroom™️ Components Include:

Each station is designed to last about 15-20 minutes. Students may do one a day for eight days, two a day for four days, or any format that works for your classroom. Because there are additional activities for the Watch and Play stations, you can offer those as a choice within that station or offer them as an early finisher station, as well.

NGSS Alignment

As a Fifth Grade Performance Expectation, students are expected to “Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.” (5-LS1-1). This correlates with the DCI 5-LS1.C, which states, “Plants acquire their material for growth chiefly from air and water.” All stations in this set meet the Performance Expectation and DCIs, helping students gain an understanding of how substances, such as carbon dioxide, water, and other nutrients, enter the plant from the air and water, supplying all the needed material for plant growth.

This Performance Expectation, 5-LS1-1, is concerned with what plants need to grow and what are the necessary materials for plant growth to happen. Students will be learning about the biological processes of photosynthesis as part of the scope of this PE, including the flow of energy in the form of sugar through the plant, plant tissue growth and maintenance, etc.
