Included in the How People Affect Earth Science Stations UNIT BUNDLE

► Vocabulary Cards in two formats with and without pictures (only available in the BUNDLE)

► Big Idea Posters to display in your classroom (only available in the BUNDLE)

► Checklists for teachers and students (only available in the BUNDLE)

► Watch a Video – Students watch a video about how humans affect the oceans and can take better care of them or a video about how humans affect the forests and what they can do to protect them.   They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ available)

► Play a Game – Students play a board game with other students. Another option is a crossword or word search puzzle. The crossword and word search puzzles are available digitally.

► Investigate How People Affect the Ocean –  Students read about how people affect the ocean.  They conduct an investigation to find out the best way to clean up after an oil spill in the ocean. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Diagram Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle –  Students read about how people impact the Earth with the trash and pollution they generate.  They research how certain materials are recycled.  They then create a diagram to show the process of this recycling.  Students then answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Read about How People Affect the Different Spheres – Students read about Earth’s four spheres, how people have affected each of the spheres, and what is being done to solve human-caused problems in each of the spheres.  They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ is available)

► Model Sustainable Agriculture – Students read about agriculture and a few sustainability practices.  They model one sustainable practice by making compost bins.  They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

Explore Water Contamination – Students read about the negative impacts people have on Earth’s water and what is being done to solve the problems.  They explore natural filters in a hands-on activity. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Sort Problem or Solution – Students read about how people affect Earth.  They look at several pictures.  They decide whether the picture shows a problem on Earth caused by people, or whether the picture shows a solution to the problem. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

Google Classroom™️ Components Include:

► Google Form™️ with Reading Passage & Differentiated Questions (for Watch, Investigate, Diagram, Read, Model, Explore and Sort)

► Google Slides™️ with Activity Directions & Worksheets (for Investigate, Diagram, Model, Explore, Sort)

Each station is designed to last about 15-20 minutes. Students may do one a day for eight days, two a day for four days, or any format that works for your classroom. Because there are additional activities for the Watch and Play stations, you can offer those as a choice within that station or offer them as an early finisher station, as well.

NGSS Alignment

As a Fifth Grade Performance Expectation, students are expected to “Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.”  (5-ESS3-1).  This correlates with the DCI 5-ESS3.C, which states, “Human activities in agriculture, industry, and everyday life have had major effects on the land, vegetation, streams, ocean, air, and even outer space. But individuals and communities are doing things to help protect Earth’s resources and environments.”

The NGSS are three-dimensional. These stations meet:

  • Performance Expectation: 5-ESS3-1
  • Disciplinary Core Ideas: ESS3.C:  Human Impacts on Earth Systems
  • Science and Engineering Practices: Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information
  • Crossing Cutting Concepts: Systems and System Models

My students enjoyed the different stations that I used from this bundle this year, and I definitely plan on incorporating more next year. I liked the variety of options so my early finishers had engaging and relevant material to work with as well.

  5. Teresa G. (verified owner)

Great resource! I liked that it showed different ways people affect the earth. This made it easy to pick and choose the right resources for my students’ needs.

  6. Jordan Jacobson (verified owner)

This was a great addition to my Earth science unit. Thank you!

  7. Laura Clarey (verified owner)

This resource is PACKED with valuable information and was a fabulous extension of our science curriculum. Students were able to continue learning about human impact in a variety of ways. Most stations require varying amounts of prep, but it’s totally worth the time up front to assemble resources that can be used year to year.

  8. Around the World from A to Zink (verified owner)

I was able to use some of these activities for my science unit about how people affect the oceans. It was a good resource to pick activities from.

  9. Christy Banks (verified owner)

My students loved learning with this resource!

  10. Crystal W. (verified owner)

This is a great resource with a lot of information. My biggest issue was the amount of time each station would likely take. There was no way I could make this work as an actual station rotation. I wish there was an expected timeframe given with each of these stations. I pieced together a lot of the resources from the stations and made it work for me. My favorite thing is probably the Google Forms checks. Still worth it for the amount of information and activities it offers.

  11. Megan C. (verified owner)

As a fourth grade teacher, we had to use these in more of a whole group setting so I could provide more guidance for the students. However, they loved it and learned a lot.

    Great Resource!
