Included in the Energy for Life Science Stations UNIT BUNDLE

► Vocabulary Cards in two formats with and without pictures (only available in the BUNDLE)

► Big Idea Posters to display in your classroom (only available in the BUNDLE)

► Checklists for teachers and students (only available in the BUNDLE)

► Watch a Video – Students watch one of two videos about energy for life and photosynthesis. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ available)

► Play a Game – Students play a board game with other students or do a crossword or word search puzzle. The crossword and word search puzzles are available digitally.

► Investigate Sun Bubbles – Students read about photosynthesis. Students conduct an investigation in which they learn about the sun’s importance in photosynthesis. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Diagram From Sunlight to Sugar – Students read about energy flow through living things. They create diagrams of this flow based on the reading section. Students then answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Read about Energy for Living Things– Students read about energy flow through living things. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ is available)

► Model Energy Flow – Students read about energy flow through living things. They create models of these processes. Students answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Explore Sugar Eaters – Students read about energy flow through living things and conduct and exploration about the transfer of energy. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Sort Photosynthesis or Cellular Respiration? – Students read about the energy flow through living things. They sort scenarios into three categories: photosynthesis, cellular respiration, or neither. They will then answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

Google Classroom™️ Components Include:

► Google Form™️ with Reading Passage & Differentiated Questions (for Watch, Investigate, Diagram, Read, Model, Explore and Sort)

► Google Slides™️ with Activity Directions & Worksheets (for Investigate, Diagram, Model, Explore, Sort)

Each station is designed to last about 15-20 minutes. Students may do one a day for eight days, two a day for four days, or any format that works for your classroom. Because there are additional activities for the Watch and Play stations, you can offer those as a choice within that station or offer them as an early finisher station, as well.

NGSS Alignment

As a Fifth Grade Performance Expectation, students are expected to “Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, motion, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.” (5-PS3-1).  This correlates with the DCI 5-PS3.D, which states, “The energy released [from] food was once energy from the sun that was captured by plants in the chemical process that forms plant matter (from air and water)” and DCI 5-LS1.C, which states, “Food provides animals with the materials they need for body repair and growth and the energy they need to maintain body warmth and for motion.”   All stations in this set meet the Performance Expectation and DCIs, helping students gain an understanding of how energy from the sun flows through living things on Earth.

The NGSS are three-dimensional. These stations meet:

  • Performance Expectation: 5-PS3-1
  • Disciplinary Core Ideas: PS3.D: Energy in Chemical Processes and Everyday Life and LS1.C: Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms
  • Science and Engineering Practices: Developing and Using Models
  • Crossing Cutting Concepts: Energy and Matter

I recently used the *How Energy Moves Through Living Things: Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration* resource in my classroom, and it was a fantastic addition to our science curriculum. The eight science stations provided a comprehensive and engaging exploration of energy flow in living organisms. Each station focused on different aspects of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, offering hands-on activities that captivated my students' interest and enhanced their understanding. The variety of tasks, including sorting activities, diagramming, and modeling, catered to diverse learning styles and kept students actively involved. I highly recommend this resource for educators seeking an interactive and thorough approach to teaching these essential life science concepts.
