► Play a Game – Students play a board game with other students. Another option is a crossword or word search puzzle. The crossword and word search puzzles are available digitally.

► Investigate Night and Day–  Students read about patterns that are caused by the movement of the Earth around the sun.  They investigate what happens as the Earth revolves around the sun while rotating on its axis. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Diagram Moon Phases –  Students read about the different phases of the moon.  They create a diagram of this based on an activity they conduct.  Students then answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Read about Rotations and Revolutions – Students read about how the rotations and revolutions of the Earth and moon cause changes in patterns on Earth.  They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ is available)

► Model Tilting Planet – Students read about how the Earth’s tilt, rotation, and revolution cause the seasons on Earth to change.  They use models to conduct an investigation about this. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Explore Eclipses – Students read about solar and lunar eclipses.  They explore these events in a hands-on activity. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

► Sort Seasonal Changes – Students read about seasonal changes and their causes and effects.  They sort several scenarios according to their season.  They then answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned. (Google Form™️ and Google Slides™️ are available)

Google Classroom™️ Components Include:

► Google Form™️ with Reading Passage & Differentiated Questions (for Watch, Investigate, Diagram, Read, Model, Explore and Sort)

► Google Slides™️ with Activity Directions & Worksheets (for Investigate, Diagram, Model, Explore, Sort)

Each station is designed to last about 15-20 minutes. Students may do one a day for eight days, two a day for four days, or any format that works for your classroom. Because there are additional activities for the Watch and Play stations, you can offer those as a choice within that station or offer them as an early finisher station, as well.

NGSS Alignment

As a Fifth Grade Performance Expectation, students are expected to “Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.”  (5-ESS1-2).  This correlates with the DCI 5-ESS1.A, which states, “The orbits of Earth around the sun and of the moon around Earth, together with the rotation of Earth about an axis between its North and South poles, cause observable patterns. These include day and night; daily changes in the length and direction of shadows; and different positions of the sun, moon, and stars at different times of the day, month, and year.”  All stations in this set meet the Performance Expectation and DCI, helping students gain an understanding of the patterns caused by the Earth, moon, and sun.

The NGSS are three-dimensional. These stations meet:

  • Performance Expectation: 5-ESS1-2
  • Disciplinary Core Ideas: ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System
  • Science and Engineering Practices: Analyzing and Interpreting Data
  • Crossing Cutting Concepts: Patterns
