These Three-Digit Subtraction Worksheets include practice activities to help your students solidify their understanding of how to subtract three-digit numbers using a variety of strategies, including a number line, base-10 blocks, breaking apart (or ungrouping) the addends, and place value strategies.
Also included is an editable PowerPoint template of the pages where you can insert your own numbers for even more practice.
Three digit subtraction can be complicated for students who do not have good number sense. The worksheets and activities in this unit focus on developing number sense while subtracting three-digit numbers.
These worksheets compliment my Three-Digit Addition Worksheets. Both use the same strategies and levels of scaffolding.
The problems move from simple (subtracting 100s) to complex (regrouping at any place value) while practicing these main strategies: Use a Number Line, Use Base-10 Blocks, and Break Apart (also called Ungroup, Incremental Adding, adding by Place Value). The Break Apart Strategy is illustrated in two formats: using a V and adding 100s to 100s, 10s to 10s, and 1s to 1s. Both of these strategies are the same but formatted differently for different learners. The strategies are generally repeated at each level so that students learn to apply them to different problems.
Included are four levels of three-digit subtraction equations that move from simple to complex:
- Subtract 100s
- Subtract 100s & Tens (no regrouping)
- No Regrouping
- Regrouping
- A: Regrouping 10s to 1s only
- B: Regrouping 100s to 10s only
- C: Regrouping 100s to 10s OR 10s to 1s (one place only)
- D: Regrouping ALL Places & Across Os
You can differentiate instruction and give students just what they need to successfully subtract three-digit numbers.
There are four main strategies that are practiced through the activities in this product as well as pages that compare the strategies.
- Use a Number Line
- Use Base-10 Blocks
- Break Apart (Ungroup)
- Subtract with Vs (Tens to Tens & Ones to Ones)
- Compare the Strategies
Activities and strategies are repeated at each level so that students know the process and can apply it with different levels of three-digit subtraction equations.

This was a great resource to use with my 2nd Grade class. It helped reinforce the many different strategies to subtract three digit numbers! Thank you!

My students were interested and challenged by the different subtraction activities with the Vs, open number line, break apart, etc. The activities showed me which students did not quite grasp the regrouping concept while empowering many students.
