Two-Digit Addition Number Puzzles are a set of four-piece puzzles that develop students’ fluency and mental math strategies for two-digit addition.
Two-Digit Addition Number Puzzles are a set of four-piece puzzles that develop students’ fluency and mental math strategies using a variety of two-digit addition strategies.
The puzzles are built with four models and strategies:
- the expression
- a number line
- base-10 blocks
- breaking apart the addends by place value
The answer is displayed in the middle of the puzzle. Each piece requires students to figure out the answer using the strategy or model and does not reveal the answer without some work.
Students can match all four pieces or concentrate two pieces at a time.
Puzzle sets include 20 expressions that require regrouping and 20 expressions that do not require regrouping, for a total of 40 puzzles. Some puzzles do have a sum over 100.
This activity is meant to develop students’ ability to use a variety of addition strategies to gain fluency with two-digit addition.
Simple print each puzzle piece on colored paper, laminate for durability, and cut apart. I encourage students to use whiteboard markers on some pieces to add. If laminated, the whiteboard marker ink wipes off easily.
