Decompose Two-Digit Number Puzzles are a set of four-piece puzzles that develop students’ number sense for two-digit addition and subtraction.
The puzzles are built with four number relationships. For example:
- 52
- 50+2
- 40+12
- 40+10+2
Students can match all four pieces or concentrate two pieces at a time.
Puzzle sets include two-digit numbers 21 – 98. Only numbers with a 1-8 in the ones place are included, i.e.: no numbers with a 0 or 9 in the ones place are included (like 20 or 29). This activity is meant to develop students’ ability to decompose numbers for the purpose of addition and subtraction.
Included is a recording sheet where students practice decomposing a ten and explain their process.
Simple print each puzzle piece on colored paper, laminate for durability, and cut apart.
