Processes that Shape the Earth is a second grade science unit that addresses all the Next Generation Science Standards for Earth Science. It is full of leveled reading passages, before and after reading activities, vocabulary cards, and ways for students to practice using academic language. In the unit are four sections:

ESS2.C: Where is Water? (Main Idea & Details)

There are three leveled passages, high, medium, and low, for each section.

Each section has Before Reading (three-part vocabulary cards and language development activity with the comprehension skill) During Reading (text dependent questions), andAfter Reading (comprehension with language development activity with the comprehension skill) as well as a Written End-of-Section Summative Assessment.

The activities in this product are great for all second-grade students including English learners and below-grade-level readers. The Before Reading activity provides scaffolding for the comprehension skill using familiar content and scenarios. The three-part vocabulary cards allow students to interact with the vocabulary in a variety of ways.

The After Reading activity mimics the structure of the Before Reading activity and language of the comprehension skill so that students are familiar with the language patterns and need only use those patterns with new rigorous content.

Also available separately is an interactive notebook that follows the framework of this unit.

    I use this in conjunction with other 2nd grade science resources. Comparatively, I found this resource to be very advanced for many of my students. Even when using the differentiated reading articles, I need to read the passages aloud to my students and work with them to comprehend the information.
    Also, the activities throughout the bundle seem somewhat redundant to me. I would appreciate more comprehension based activities included.
